vocational rehabilitation

supporting individuals to return to work following injury or illness

Carpenter Tools

Returning to work after an injury or illness is challenging. We know that the longer a person is off work, the harder it is to return, which is why we advocate for the importance of vocational rehabilitation from the start of a person's rehabilitation pathway. As occupational therapists, we understand the significance of the foundational skills required for work. We need to be able to plan our time, manage our self-care, get our kids to school, drive or use public transport —the list goes on, and that’s before we even start the job! We frequently need to focus on those pre-vocational skills in preparation to support the individual back into work, without solely concentrating on the end goal. Through bespoke assessments and interventions, we can determine whether the person can return to their previous role or needs to consider other options. Because we work in a person-centered way, we ensure that everything we do is focused on what is right for the individual we are working with.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Employer

"The assessment was so helpful.  It was objective and fair and whilst supporting [the employee] it also really helped me as HR manager understand the health condition and what we can do to help [the employee] return to work, and more importantly stay in work as we need people with his specialist skills."

Case Manager

"[Client] was really finding it hard to see that she could not return to the job she was doing before the accident.  With your support and encouragement she slowly recognised her limitations and became much more accepting of a new way forward to a vocational role that was much more suitable for her.  She was guided through the whole experience and has now built up new skills, and is working part time in a job she is really enjoying!"

Employee

"Thank you for being so kind.  I was so concerned about how I was going to manage at work but with your support and guidance I feel much happier about the plan in place.  You seemed to really understand my perspective and what I was struggling with."
